Definition of natural minor scales

A natural minor scale is a sequence of eight notes such that:
  • the 2nd note is 2 semitones above the 1st
  • the 3rd note is 1 semitone above the 2nd
  • the 4th note is 2 semitones above the 3rd
  • the 5th note is 2 semitones above the 4th
  • the 6th note is 1 semitone above the 5th
  • the 7th note is 2 semitones above the 6th
  • the 8th note is 2 semitones above the 7th
The pattern is 0+2+1+2+2+1+2+2 = 12 (an octave).
Alternatively, a natural minor scale is a sequence of eight notes such that:
  • the 2nd note is 2 semitones above the first
  • the 3rd note is 3 semitones above the first
  • the 4th note is 5 semitones above the first
  • the 5th note is 7 semitones above the first
  • the 6th note is 8 semitones above the first
  • the 7th note is 10 semitones above the first
  • the 8th note is 12 semitones above the first
The pattern is [0, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12].

Notes about natural minor scales

Please note the following facts:
  • The A natural minor scale is the only natural minor scale composed entirely of white keys.
  • Other natural minor scales contain at least one black key.
  • Each natural minor scale contains two minor triads.
  • Each natural minor scale contains one major triad.
  • The first minor triad is composed of the 1st, 3rd, and 5th steps.
  • The second minor triad is composed of the 4th, 6th, and 8th steps.
  • The major triad is composed of the 3rd, 5th, and 7th steps.
  • In the A natural minor scale, the two minor triads are: A,C,E and D,F,A, while the major triad is C,E,G.
